The Calheta Beach is a 101-room hotel blissfully located in an unspoilt corner of Madeira, leading onto what is arguably the island’s best golden-sand beach. Set on a coastline that stretches between the mountainous inland and the waters of the ocean, there are splendid sea views one way and a mountain backdrop the other. The hotel also has views across to the local marina. In addition to an indoor swimming pool, there is an attractive outdoor option on the beachfront, fringed by sun loungers and palm trees.
A delicious breakfast is served at the Calheta Restaurant, while the hotel’s main restaurant, the Onda Azul Restaurant, which has an alfresco terrace, serves Madeiran cuisine in a chic setting. There are three bars, one indoors which features a billiards table and hosts evening entertainment, one by the pool and another with direct access to the promenade. The hotel also has a spa, which offers a range of treatments, and a well-equipped fitness centre.

The Savoy Calheta Beach is half an hour’s drive from Funchal – the hotel offers a shuttle service (at extra cost) – where you can take in the restaurants, shops and amenities of the island’s capital. Nearer to the hotel, you can visit the Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools, formed by the volcanic rocks around, and the volcanic caves of Sao Vincente, accessed by an underground walkway one kilometre long and with a visitor centre at the end.
