The luxurious Sani Dunes hotel is part of the Sani Resort, a family-owned ecological reserve that’s spread across 1,000 acres. Set between the Aegean Sea and the pine forests of the Kassandra Peninsula, it has a large heated swimming pool, as well as a swanky spa with a private steam bath, Thai massage cabin, Jacuzzi and fitness studio. There’s also a private beach and an open-air theatre.
Guests can follow the wetland path along the cliff tops between the Sani Resort and Siviri village – you might spot rabbits, turtles and rare butterfly species – or hike through the woods and along the beach to the Bousoulas bird sanctuary. Other free activities include beekeeping trips, sunset cruises around the Sani Marina and paddleboard yoga lessons – an easy way to relax on the water. There are several bars and restaurants, all of which have views of the lagoon pool or sea. For a contemporary, fine-dining experience visit Fresco, with menus created by Michelin-starred chef Ettore Botrini, or for a more relaxed meal try the Beach House, which is right on the beach.
Halkidiki is “utterly unspoilt”, says The Daily Telegraph, with swathes of forest, white-sand coastlines and picturesque Greek villages. The Sani Dunes hotel is on the Toroneos Gulf, on the most westerly of Halkidiki’s three peninsulas. The city of Thessaloniki is just over an hour’s drive away – be sure to climb the ancient walls at sunset, stop for a cocktail on the waterfront, and visit one of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Byzantine monuments. Closer to the hotel you’ll find the Bousoulas bird sanctuary, the traditional village of Siviri and the eerie caves of Petralona, where the oldest human remains ever found in Greece were discovered. We also recommend a visit to Athitos, which is 20 minutes away by car – you’ll have to park nearby, as the historic centre is completely pedestrianised. This traditional village has cobblestoned streets and a pretty square, as well as plenty of traditional tavernas where you can while away the afternoon.
